About the CISMGE - CCES

A Geotechnical Division of Beijing Branch - China Civil Engineering Society was proposed by Dr. Yisheng Mao in 1953 in order to promote exchanges of technical, scientific and professional knowledge. This purpose has been carried on ever since. The Chinese institution of Soil Mechanics and foundation Engineering was established in 1957 on that basis. The name was changed into the Chinese institution of Soil Mechanics and foundation Engineering – China Civil Engineering Society in 1978 and later the Chinese institution of Soil Mechanics and geotechnical Engineering – China Civil Engineering Society (CISMGE - CCES) in 1999.

The spirit of CISMGE is to encourage and support members to uphold and advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the geotechnical profession by using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare; by being honest and impartial and serving with fidelity the public, their employers and clients; by striving to increase the competence and prestige of the profession; and by supporting the professional and technical societies of their disciplines.

CISMGE is the largest and most active society among such societies in existence in China. It has never stopped growing from the very outset in terms of its memberships. Owing to the economic and infrastructure developments in China, CISMGE has been played an important role to provide the best geotechnical forum for collaborations and exchanges. CISMGE celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007 and held the 11th national conference in 2011 with 1199 participants.

CISMGE joined the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering in 1957. It hosted the Second International Conference on Unsaturated Soils in 1988, the Tenth International Symposium on Landslides and Engineered Slopes in 2008, and GeoShanghai in 2010.

Chinese geotechnical profession is increasingly keen to be integrated in international society. CISMGE have 205 ISSMGE members in 2009, 376 members in 2010 and 481 members in 2011. Dr. Zuyu Chen served as the Vice President of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and geotechnical Engineering for Asia from 2009 to 2010. Many Chinese geotechnicians serve in Technical committee of the international society.
